This is model Ami, from a 3-hour session at (the aforementioned Joanne Mehl's) Brush & Palette. We will have Ami back next week, and hopefully won't be snowed out for it. She is a gorgeous woman of Ukranian descent, dressed as a gypsy. You may not get any of that out of the painting, I'm never trying to do a portrait, although I am happy if there is some likeness. What I see here, after a few days of not looking, (and then looking again), is an expression of irritation and distrust. I think I'll leave off with her looking just that way. I painted her on "inauguration day." (Of what needs not be spoken here, I have other venues for that.)
Joanne Mehl orchestrates model sessions at the Brush & Palette, and has begun again in the new year with model Jorge. We got snowed out of the 2nd session, but with this one, I wouldn't have carried the painting much further, anyway. I would have liked to do another painting still, tho'.... to do a full figure pose. It may still happen.
Ha! I like that riff on Lawrence of Arabia! This is Jesus of Cuba, our wonderful, knowledgeable and compassionate tour guide for the November 2016 trip to Cuba. I was a bit too exacting in the underpainting, and now I don't want to go into it with color. I'm not sure I'd have much to add to the image in terms of portraying the essence of him. I quite like this stage. We'll see as time goes on.
I did a lot of little paintings at the beginning of January (1-10), some successful, some not. The Strada Easel company was the impetus for them, but I knew I couldn't stick to it and do some of my other actual work. Be that as it may, here is my favorite of the ten, and perhaps I will post some others later. A place saver, so to speak.
This isn't at all as I envisioned painting it--and I just realized, I forgot to do the cast shadows. Tweaks tomorrow! The setup didn't strike me as being retro, but it sure came out that way. The glass fishnet ball and a small glass vase are aqua, the perfect foils for an orange flower. I gerry-rigged some lighting and put the glassware in a cardboard box to create this still life--first time I've done this here in my studio. I'm not a big fan of still life, but I know it's a very good exercise.Kay Elmorehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02735219549098471206noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3196197518691312124.post-104152617447232752016-10-25T19:34:00.000-07:002016-10-25T19:34:16.610-07:00Ballerina

Whoops... missed one when I updated the blog yesterday. Did this last week but forgot to include in it's proper chronological place. This is from a photo taken at one of the Falcon sessions, back when I had space there. Pic must be eight or nine years old now, but I've wanted to do some "mud heads" from the photo series, so here's the first crack at it. A likely Big 500 entrant.Kay Elmorehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02735219549098471206noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3196197518691312124.post-68671281261714860832016-10-24T22:26:00.000-07:002016-10-24T22:26:01.954-07:00Rome

I took so many photos out in the Helvetia area during the plein air event, it's just breathtakingly beautiful out there. This is the llama barn again, but no llamas in evidence. Llamas are so cute, I could hang out with them all day. So attentive! And curious. And just plain friendly. Hi guys!!!
Another from the Helvetia area. I stood looking out at the amazing views from the Century Farm, and loved that the cows kept me company. A few tweaks are needed to complete (missing a roof or two, and the silo), but this will likely be another Big 500 entrant.
The Fall leaves are turning here in Oregon. This was out in the Helvetia area, and I did a few plein air paintings out that way as well. But I didn't like those, so I'm not posting them.
First effort for the Big 500. It's got some value problems to resolve, but is far enough along --I'll complete it later -- I've got to keep moving forward. I'm going for 15 this year. This is from a photo taken in about 2000 during peak leaf season in Vermont or New Hampshire. That region is absolutely astounding when the leaves turn. It literally makes my heart beat faster!Kay Elmorehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02735219549098471206noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3196197518691312124.post-27979162576973074192016-10-24T21:16:00.001-07:002016-10-28T20:10:27.070-07:00Reading Yevtushenko

This was painted at the "Quickdraw" during the Washington County Plein Air event held at the end of September. The Quickdraw is usually done outdoors, in keeping with the rest of the event--but it was raining that day, so we worked inside of a large theater space in Hillsboro. I thought we had three hours to complete it... but towards the end I discovered that it was only two hours and I really had to slap the paint on thick!
