New one underway - "Los Caracoles"

Update: Replaced top image with current state of the painting. Quite an exercise in subtle value and temperature shifts. The further along it is, the slower it goes. BTW--This is a 12" x 16" panel on 1/8" mdf.

Top: First block-in of painting, mostly the darks. It's very useful to photograph along the way; I see here that the building is leaning over towards the top. Whoops--didn't see that before.

Bottom: This is one of those sketches that I'll be sad to see it go, but I'll be painting over it--this is my new version of an "underpainting". I won't pencil in all the darks tho', which I'm finding unnecessary--just need to make some contour adjustments here and there and I'll be ready to go in paint.

Salt 'n Peppa

6" x 8" graphite sketch on gessoed luan, done on another Drawing Club day. The painting (on top) is done in a much-thinned down roughness. Exploring thin adjacent to opaque. Trying for minimal color, but of course that didn't work.

Walking the.... unicorn?

6" x 8" painting on top of a very minimal contour drawing. Sunny Sunday down at the Waterfront for brunch. Great table at the window with plenty of people watching. Graphite sketch done before leaving. Painting from photo at home--may not be done with the sky yet. But that dog! I was too tired to address it and just swooshed in some paint, thinking I'd deal with it later. But when I looked at it the next day... what the heck? Is that a cockatoo? A miniature horse? A unicorn? I don't know, but it's stayin'.

Table in the Window

6" x 8" panel, painted on top of a graphite sketch done at the Thursday Drawing Club. This is Charlie, whom I was appreciating as he sketched an unknown subject. Glorious sunny day; perhaps I should lighten the plants outside the window, there's more glare on the window than indicated.

3/26 sketch; 28th painting

Bronwyn Two

Or three? This one's a little 6"x 8", a rough sketch done at Studio 30. I didn't like the large version I started there at the same time, so came home and painted on top of the small graphite sketch.
