Another version

Using a photo of the model from last Friday, I made a concerted effort to limit myself to four tonal values, and to leave every brushstroke right where it was placed without messing with it. I was fairly successful with these objectives, initially  but bad habits started to creep back in and I thought I'd stop here for now. Further contemplation is in order.

Catherine

This is after three sessions--I think I can finish in one more, depending on how finished I'll do the hands.  I'm thinking not very.  I have more work to post, but I'll wait 'til after the Portrait Show opens at Northbank.  Hope to see you at the reception (see next post).

Portrait show coming up....

I am in the upcoming Portrait show at Northbank Artists Gallery in Vancouver, WA. The show reception is February 1, 2013 from 5-9pm.  In lieu of a web site, I thought I would post a few portraits here, since this blog is linked to the gallery site's announcement of the show.  Hope you can pay a visit; here is the link:

Note: none of the above are in the show, these are just a few more examples. You'll have to come to the opening (or thereafter) to see which one is there!

Samantha as "Odalisque"

This pose begged for a long canvas or board, which, regrettably, I did not have with me, way out there at Nancy's studio.  So I taped two sheets of watercolor paper together (the left half of which was not supported at all!) and got to work.  I intended to do the same as previous two efforts--pastel on top of acrylic--but as I worked on it, it seemed that I should stick with acrylic and not mix the two.  I want to complete this, but will see if I can get the two sheets mounted sturdily to a board first. Again, posting a mere work-in-progress for chronological reasons.

Ang, unfinished

First painting of the new year; "Ang", done in Kat's studio (with a terrific party afterward!), again done in acrylic with new pastels on top.  Not quite finished, but am posting anyway in an effort to keep this blog chronological.

Last of 2012

Updating the blog, this is "Ed", created in Janet's basement on the last Friday of 2012.  It is in pastel on top of an acrylic base, on watercolor paper. It was my first attempt to work with the brand new Sennelier set--a Christmas gift, and thank you to you-know-who-you-are!!  The pastels are divine, I really love working with them!
